Troubleshooting

If you’re experiencing issues with R2modman or your modded games, follow these troubleshooting steps in order. Most problems can be fixed with a few simple adjustments.

1. Start the Game Using “Start Modded”

Make sure you’re launching the game through R2modman by clicking “Start Modded”. Launching directly through Steam will load the game without mods.

2. Game Doesn’t Launch at All

If nothing happens when you try to launch the game:

  • Check the Steam Directory:
Ensure the correct Steam path is set in R2modman. The default location is:
    C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam
(This should be the Steam installation folder, not the game folder.)
  • Non-Steam Games:
Make sure the correct game folder or executable is selected in R2modman.
  • Antivirus Conflict:
If an antivirus is blocking R2modman, add an exception for r2modman.exe.

3. Black Screen on Launch

If you see a black screen after launching the game:

  • Select the affected profile in R2modman.
  • Go to Settings > Debugging > Run Preloader Fix.
  • Wait for Steam to finish validating the game files, then try again.

4. Game Starts but Mods Don’t Load

If the game launches but mods are not active:

  • Steam Users:
    • Right-click the game in Steam > Manage > Browse local files.
    • Note the game path.
    • In R2modman, go to Settings > Locations > Change Game Directory and make sure it matches the Steam path exactly.
  • Launch Arguments:
    • Right-click the game in Steam > Properties.
    • Make sure the Launch Options box is empty.
  • Non-Steam Users:
    • Make sure R2modman is pointing to the correct executable file of your game.

5. Corrupted BepInEx Installation

Signs of a corrupt BepInEx install:

  • Exporting your profile does not generate a code.

Fix it by:

  • Go to Settings > Toggle Download Cache (disable it).
  • Export profile as code (if it fails, proceed to the next steps).
  • Reinstall BepInEx from the Online tab.
  • Create a new profile:
    • Go to Settings > Change Profile > Import from Code
    • Launch game via Start Modded
    • Re-enable Download Cache if desired

6. Run R2modman as Administrator

If certain folders are not writable or you encounter permission issues:

  • Right-click r2modman.exe > Run as Administrator.
  • Alternatively, move your game install folder to a location that doesn’t require admin access.

7. Restart Your PC

Sometimes, simply restarting your system can resolve issues with launching or loading mods. Try this as a final step if other fixes don’t work.
